HOT BLOOD: Exhibition Opening at White Rabbit Gallery

Bold. Audacious. Raw. These are just some of the words which describe the opening of Hot Blood, White Rabbit Gallery’s latest exhibit opening this weekend. 

​

Bringing together 24 international artists and risk takers, Hot Blood explores contemporary issues ranging from age to gender to national identity encompassed in a post-internet era.

​

Producer Amelia spoke with the gallery coordinator Hannah Toohey ahead of the show’s opening to tell us a little more about what we might expect.

A recent report released by the University of Queensland has revealed the difficulties many Indigenous women and girls face in accessing basic sanitary products.

 

As a result, it has forced many Aboriginal women in remote communities to use toilet paper, socks or rags instead of hygiene products like tampons or pads.

 

Although high costs may explain the lack of access, it’s broader impacts have a broad range of humanitarian and community groups concerned.

 

Verbal Divorce on Trial in India

Triple talaq is a controversial method of divorce that allows for an instant separation in marriage if the word ‘talaq’ is pronounced three times.

Could Indigenous-Only Schools Close the Gap?

Medicare Data Leaked and Sold on the Dark Web

In a report released by the Guardian today, new findings have revealed how a ‘darknet’ trader is selling Medicare patient details for as little as $30 AUD.
 

 

Since it’s release, the article by Paul Farrell has raised a range of responses by politicians, and cyber security experts alike.
 

 

The data breach also raises broader concerns surrounding the vulnerability of government -controlled databases.

Traditional Owners Rebuke Prime Minister Turnbull's Promise to Adani

The Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has met with  Chairman Gautam Adani’s this week in India, during his three day visit.

 

It has been reported that the Prime Minister has made a claim to resolve the Native Title issues surrounding the Carmichael coalmine in Central Queensland.

 

If the $21 billion plan goes ahead ensuring the building of what would be Australia’s largest coal mine the projected impacts include environmental concerns ranging from the burning of fossil fuels to reef damage.

 

Opponents to the mine who have been resisting the Government’s plan remain firmly against Adani’s project, and believe that traditional native land owners have been forgotten in the conversation.

Labor to Block Tougher Citizenship Legislation Laws

Labor has today rejected the coalition’s proposed changes to Australian citizenship requirements.
 

The Coalition is asking migrants to prove their commitment to Australia by passing a new citizenship test that demands higher English levels and a stronger understanding of Australian values.

​

But critics say these changes could unfairly target vulnerable people looking to enter the country.
